Make it routine
Testing
Current diagnostic tests make infection identification easier and the results are immediate. In many areas of the United States, tests should become a routine part of a clinic's canine Lyme disease protocol.
Testing is easy and fast
The IDEXX SNAP® 4Dx® test detects the presence of C6 antibodies to a unique antigen on the Borrelia burgdorferi organism.
- Antigen is expressed only during active infection
- Not cross-reactive to antibodies from commercial Lyme vaccines
- Helpful for dogs who have been previously vaccinated
- Helpful for dogs whose vaccination status is unknown
- Positive response indicates a dog is or has been infected with Borrelia burgdorferi
Highly specific and convenient, the IDEXX SNAP® 4Dx® test can be done in the exam room and takes just eight to 10 minutes for results. Because the test also checks for heartworm disease, it is usually done at the annual wellness exam.

Testing is a tool for identifying Lyme disease
Clinic staff should consider testing dogs presenting with non-specific clinical signs to rule out Lyme disease.
